Askern Scouts community group

Gleeson contributes to Askern Scouts' recovery project

Askern Scouts has long been a hub for children and families in Askern and the surrounding areas, run entirely by volunteers. In September 2024, the group faced a major setback when its clubhouse was vandalised and stripped of all contents, leaving it unable to operate.

Following a public appeal for help, Gleeson Homes, alongside other generous local businesses, stepped in to support the essential recovery.

Although Gleeson has no live developments in Askern at present, the Company has delivered two developments locally and remains committed to supporting the communities it has helped shape. Gleeson donated show home furniture to refurnish the clubhouse after its internal refurbishment.

The break-in also wiped the Scouts’ savings, originally earmarked for improving its outdoor facilities. The group had been fundraising to transform an overgrown and unruly area into an outdoor learning space, essential for authentic Scouting experiences. Gleeson was proud to support this vision and was able to clear the space of weeds, rubbish, and bushes, and resurfaced the space to create a safe, maintainable area for activities.

“Gleeson's generous donation of time, effort, and physical contributions has been instrumental in allowing us to continue offering the community of Askern this important facility. It is clear that the business is passionate about making the community a better and safer place for the current residents, too. Thank you again!”

Matt Nicholas,
Askern Scouts leader

“At Gleeson, we believe our responsibility goes beyond building homes; it’s about creating a lasting legacy for the communities we serve. Supporting Askern Scouts after such a challenging time was an easy decision for us. We’re proud to help restore a space that brings so much joy and opportunity to local families.”

Jim Brooks,
Regional Managing Director at Gleeson Homes

Gleeson was honoured to join Askern Scouts at their official reopening in September 2025. Seeing the incredible transformation first-hand and watching the space come alive again for the community was a truly special moment. What stood out most was the unwavering commitment and hard work of Matt and the entire team of volunteers, who dedicated countless hours to make this vision a reality.

Several of Gleeson’s valued contractors also supported the renovation of the Hub. Additional support was offered by Shaun Cutts and Dave Scrivens from Northern Groundcare, and Conor Kane and Jon Elms from Rock Civil Engineering, whose expertise and generosity played a vital role in bringing this project to life.
